Username Generator That Checks Platform Rules

Fifteen characters on X, one underscore on Roblox, lowercase only on Discord: a username generator should only suggest handles the sign-up form will accept, and every name here is checked against the platform you pick.

Extras: numbers, leetspeak, shuffle

Pick where the name will live, then press Generate usernames. Every idea is checked against that app's rules, with a badge for each of the 8 apps.

Runs in your browser: nothing you type leaves this page. Platforms change their rules now and then — if the sign-up screen disagrees, the sign-up screen wins.

A username generator earns its keep only when the names it hands you get past the sign-up form. I have watched a "perfect" handle bounce off X because it was 17 characters, off Roblox because it had a second underscore, and off Twitch because it started with one. So the generator above checks every name against the rules of the platform you pick, shows where else the same handle would pass, and keeps your own word whole.

Four moves from idea to a handle you can claim

    1. Start with a word or your name. A hobby, a nickname, a pet, a city vibe, or open the From my name tab for seven patterns built from your first and last name. Accented letters are converted to plain Latin (José becomes Jose), never silently dropped, and a word in Cyrillic, Greek or Chinese characters gets a "use Latin letters" note instead of vanishing.
    2. Pick the platform first. There are nine tiles: Any app plus the eight platforms. The tile you pick sets the length range (the slider stops at that platform's maximum) and the allowed characters, and a separator the platform cannot take, such as a hyphen on X or a period on Roblox, is greyed out, with a short note when your choice switches. Discord and TikTok show names in lowercase, the way they save them. If you want one name for every app, switch on the works-everywhere filter instead.
    3. Choose a style and a word theme. There are eight styles, from cool and aesthetic to professional and minimal, and 19 word themes such as animals, space and mythology. Seven letter-and-separator looks are one tap away: DarkWolf, darkWolf, darkwolf, dark_wolf, dark.wolf, dark-wolf and DARKWOLF. Add numbers or leetspeak only if you actually like the look.
    4. Read the badges, then copy. Each name is a card with eight platform badges; tap a badge to see why it passes or fails. The card also shows its length and, for Discord and TikTok, the lowercase form it is saved as. The "10 more" button adds to the list (up to 50 names) without repeats instead of wiping it. Save favourites as you go, then copy them all, download them as a CSV file or clear them. For a handle you already have, the Check & taken? tab gives the same verdict on demand.

Username rules on Instagram, TikTok, X, Discord and the rest

I always check the X limit first: 15 characters is the tightest box you will meet. The rest of the table is where most rejected sign-ups come from: a dot where it is not allowed, an underscore in the wrong place, or a capital letter that a lowercase-only platform quietly flattens.

    Username rules for Latin-letter handles
    PlatformLengthAllowed charactersExtra rules
Instagram1–30letters, digits, . _no period at the start or end, no ..
TikTok2–24lowercase letters, digits, . _cannot end with a period; stored lowercase
X (Twitter)4–15letters, digits, _no "Twitter" or "Admin" inside the name
YouTube handle3–30letters and digits of many languages, _ - . ·separators not first or last; nothing that looks like a URL or a phone number
Discord2–32lowercase letters, digits, _ .forced lowercase, no ..; display name is separate
Twitch4–25letters, digits, _cannot start with _
Roblox3–20letters, digits, _at most one _, not first or last
Reddit3–20letters, digits, _ -none beyond length and characters

Handles are case-insensitive everywhere: DarkWolf and darkwolf are the same name, and Discord and TikTok simply save it in lowercase. YouTube allows shorter handles in some scripts (Han and Hangul from 1 to 10 characters). Sources: X Help Center, Discord Support, YouTube Help, Twitch developer forum, Hootsuite on Instagram. Platforms do change their rules, so if the sign-up screen disagrees, the sign-up screen wins. Every rule is unpacked with examples in Username rules by platform.

    One handle for every app

Lay the eight rule sets on top of each other and only a narrow strip is valid on all of them: 4 to 15 characters, lowercase letters and digits, at most one underscore, and not at the start or end. X sets the ceiling, X and Twitch set the floor, Roblox caps the underscores.

Bar chart of username length limits on eight platforms, with the 4 to 15 character band that fits all of them highlighted
The shaded band is the only length every platform accepts.

The two usual traps are the dot and the hyphen. A dot looks clean on Instagram and breaks the name everywhere else; a hyphen fails on six of the eight. Here is one name written four ways:

    HandleResult
    dark_wolfpasses all 8
DarkWolfpasses all 8; saved as darkwolf on Discord and TikTok
    dark.wolffails X, Twitch, Roblox, Reddit
darkwolf_fails YouTube and Roblox (underscore at the end)

My advice: claim the plain lowercase version on every app the same day, even the ones you will not use yet. Matching handles are what make you findable.

Making a username from your name

For a creator, a freelancer or a small shop, the real name is usually the right call. The From my name tab turns a first and a last name into seven patterns. Take Anna Kowalski:

    PatternCharactersWhere it works
    annakowalski12all 8
    anna_kowalski13all 8
    akowalski9all 8
    annak5all 8
    anna.kowalski13fails X, Twitch, Roblox, Reddit
    kowalski.anna13fails X, Twitch, Roblox, Reddit
    a.kowalski10fails X, Twitch, Roblox, Reddit

anna.kowalski looks nicest on Instagram, and that is exactly why people fall for it. If you want one handle across apps, take anna_kowalski. Accented names get transliterated: José becomes jose, Łukasz becomes lukasz, Søren becomes soren, and ß turns into ss. With a platform selected, the tab marks every pattern that platform would reject.

For gaming accounts, especially for younger players on Roblox or Discord, leave the full real name and a birth year out of the public handle. On Discord the display name is separate, so friends can still see a first name without it being the account name.

More patterns, initials and nickname tricks are in How to make a username from your name.

When the name you want is taken

X itself suggests the cleanest fix: an underscore before or after, as in _lindsay or lindsay_. Check the platform first, though: _name fails on Twitch, YouTube and Roblox, and name_ fails on YouTube and Roblox. Beyond that, I reach for a short set that still reads like a name:

    • prefixes: the, its, real, hey, im (itsannak, realdarkwolf)
    • suffixes: hq, official, studio, tv, plays (darkwolfplays, kowalskistudio)
    • a swapped separator, a shorter first name, or a word from your niche

You do not have to type these out yourself. Put the handle you wanted into the Check & taken? tab and the "Taken? Try these" list builds the underscore versions, the five prefixes, the five suffixes and the swapped separators, and keeps only what the selected platform accepts. For darkwolf on X that is 11 names; darkwolfofficial is 16 characters, so it is left out.

What I avoid: random digit strings (darkwolf83721 is forgettable and looks like a bot), letter-for-digit swaps like 0 for o, and birth years. The generator never looks names up for you; the profile links open the platform in a new tab so you can see for yourself. The full playbook is in Username taken? Clean ways to get a close variant.

Names people can read, say and type

    • Look-alike characters. l, I and 1 are near twins in many fonts, so are O and 0; rn passes for m and vv for w. Il1ya is a name nobody will type right on the first try.
    • Double letters at the join. darkknight has two k's where the words meet, and people drop one. Pick a different second word or put an underscore there. The generator steers clear of these joins in the names it builds, and the Check & taken? tab warns you about them in a handle you type, together with look-alike characters and a number that looks like a birth year.
    • Say it out loud. If you have to spell it for a friend over voice chat, it is too clever.
    • Stay near 15. Fifteen characters or fewer fits X, fits a mention and fits the space under a profile picture.

Leetspeak is fine for a gamertag if you swap every matching letter (a→4, e→3, i→1, o→0, s→5, t→7, so ShadowWolf becomes 5h4d0wW0lf), but it is the first thing I strip from a handle meant for business.

Where the username generator gets its rules

The limits in the table come from each platform's help pages and are applied to every name before you see it, using one shared rule set for the generator, this page and the guides. Names are built from a style word, a theme word, your keyword and an optional two-digit number from 10 to 99. The Cool style has 20 words and the Animals theme 30, so that pair alone gives 20 × 30 = 600 two-word names, and 600 × 90 numbers = 54,000 with a number. The Mix of all themes option draws on 501 different words, with duplicates removed. Every name is then checked against the selected platform, and the shortest name you will see is that platform's own minimum (4 on X and Twitch), never below 3.

When a name is too long, the username generator drops whole parts rather than chopping letters: first the style word, then the number, then the theme word. Your keyword is never cut. On a 14-character limit, SilentPanther42 (15) becomes Panther42, not SilentPanther4. On X, DarkWolfChristopher (19) becomes WolfChristopher (15). A separator left dangling at either end is removed.

Everything runs in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere, there is no availability lookup behind the scenes, and favourites stay in your browser's local storage; the CSV download is built right here, too. The only links that leave the page are the Open profile links, and only when you click one.

    Common questions

What is a good username for Instagram, TikTok or gaming?

Short, easy to say and spelled one way: a word you like plus a theme word, 4 to 15 characters, lowercase letters and digits with at most one underscore in the middle. That fits Instagram and TikTok and every gaming platform in the table at once.

How do I find a username that is available on all platforms?

First make it valid everywhere: 4 to 15 lowercase letters and digits with at most one inner underscore. Then open each platform's profile page for that handle and claim it on every app the same day.

What characters are allowed in a Discord, X or Roblox username?

Discord takes lowercase letters, digits, underscores and periods (no two periods in a row). X and Roblox take letters, digits and underscores only; Roblox allows a single underscore and not at either end.

How long can a username be on Instagram, TikTok and X?

Instagram allows up to 30 characters, TikTok 2 to 24, and X 4 to 15. X is the tightest limit you will meet among the big platforms.

Should I use my real name as my username?

For a creator, freelancer or business account, yes: it is the easiest name to find. For gaming and anonymous communities, keep the full name and birth year out of the handle and use a display name if you want friends to recognise you.

    What is an aesthetic username?

A soft, minimal handle built from calm words, often lowercase and sometimes with a period, like a two-word mood; the Aesthetic style in the generator is built for it. Keep in mind that the period limits it to Instagram, TikTok, Discord and YouTube.

Does the generator tell me if a username is available?

No. Nothing you type leaves your browser, so it cannot look names up. It checks a handle against each platform's rules, and the Open profile links take you to the platform's own page in a new tab, where you can see whether the name is taken.
